How we choose
We have not printed with any of this gear. What we did instead is compile published manufacturer data into comparable tables, cite every figure, and show the arithmetic. Here is the whole process, including its limits.
The claim we make, and the one we do not
Nearly every filament roundup on the internet asserts hands-on testing. Ours does not, because we have not done it. Publishing that plainly is a deliberate choice: an unverifiable testing claim is the easiest thing for a competitor or a search quality rater to falsify, and a site that leans on one has nothing left when it is questioned.
What we claim instead is that every specification figure on this site comes from a published manufacturer document, is linked at the point of use, and carries the date we retrieved it. That is checkable without trusting us, which is a stronger position than a testing claim you would have to take on faith.
Where the figures come from
Every source used anywhere on this site is registered in one place, with its publisher, title, URL and retrieval date. Pages cite by reference into that registry, which means a page cannot invent a URL and a revised document is a one-line correction across the whole site.
The primary sources are:
- Prusa Research — the most complete public material documentation in consumer 3D printing: per-material temperature windows, enclosure requirements, drying figures and warping guidance.
- Overture — an independent second set of published drying figures, which frequently disagree with Prusa's. Where they do, we show both.
- Bambu Lab — the only published figures we have found for how long a dried spool stays print-ready at a given humidity.
- E3D — published measurement of nozzle wear from abrasive filament.
- Formlabs — published resin safety and disposal guidance.
- U.S. Energy Information Administration — electricity pricing, for the cost-per-print arithmetic.
What we do when sources disagree
We show both figures. Prusa publish 55 C for six hours to dry PETG; Overture publish 65 C for seven. Averaging those produces 60 C for six and a half hours, which is a number no manufacturer stands behind and which nobody could check.
Showing both is also more useful. The gap tells you the safe window is wider than either figure implies, and it tells you the lower temperature for longer is the conservative choice. That is information an average destroys.
The scoring rubric
Every pick carries a score out of ten. It is an editorial fit rating for the stated use case, and it is built from four things:
- Published specification quality. Does the manufacturer state a diameter tolerance? Is there a technical data sheet, or a marketing range? A brand willing to publish a number is a brand accepting a standard.
- Fit for the stated use. A score is always for a specific job. The same product scores differently on two pages because the job is different, and that is intentional rather than inconsistent.
- Requirements versus what a normal printer has. A material that needs an enclosure, a dryer reaching a specific temperature, or a hardened nozzle is scored against whether a reader can realistically meet those.
- Honest availability and packaging. Vacuum sealing, stock consistency, spool construction. These are unglamorous and they decide real outcomes.
The score is visible on the page as ordinary content. It never enters our structured data as a product rating, because we have not tested these products and marking an editorial opinion up as a review rating would contradict this page.
The skip row
Every roundup names something to skip. Not because a product is defective, but because we could not identify a buyer for whom it is the right choice. A list where everything is recommended is a catalog, and a catalog is what a reader gets everywhere else.
How prices work
Prices are never typed into an article. They render from a live retail data layer that is refreshed on a schedule, and there is a hard freshness gate: any price older than 48 hours stops rendering and the button falls back to “check price”.
The consequence is that this site sometimes shows no price at all. That is the correct behavior. A stale number is worse than no number, because a reader acts on it.
Product photography
Where a live product image is available from the retailer catalog, we show it. Where one is not, we show a licensed photograph of the product type and the page says, in visible text next to the image, that it is illustrative rather than the exact item. We do not fabricate image URLs and we do not present a stock photograph as if it were the product.
What this site will not publish
- A claim that we tested, printed with, or own any of this gear.
- A credential nobody here holds — no engineering degree, no “reviewed by” a specialist we do not have.
- A specification figure without a source, or a source we have not actually read.
- A price we did not fetch, including a price we fetched last month.
- A customer review, rating or testimonial. We have none, so there are none on the site.
- A comparison table for a material where the published data does not exist. Several pages here say exactly that instead.
Corrections and updates
Every page carries a last-reviewed date. When a manufacturer revises a document, our figure becomes wrong, and the fix is a change to the source registry that propagates everywhere that figure is used.
