The handling requirements come first
Liquid photopolymer resin is a skin sensitizer. Formlabs' own safety guidance is explicit that handling liquid resin requires non-reactive gloves — nitrile or neoprene — and that skin contact should be avoided rather than merely cleaned up afterwards Formlabs. Sensitization is cumulative: people develop reactions after months of careless handling, not on the first exposure, which is exactly what makes it easy to get wrong.
Uncured resin and resin-contaminated alcohol are also not household waste. Formlabs publish disposal guidance for resin and cartridges that treats it as chemical waste Formlabs. Pouring used wash alcohol down a drain is the single most common resin mistake and it is a real one.
What resin actually buys you
Detail. A resin printer resolves features a filament printer cannot approach — text, texture, thin edges, faces on a miniature. If the thing you want to make is small and detailed, no amount of filament tuning gets you there.
What it does not generally buy is toughness. Standard photopolymer resins are brittle, and a resin part under load tends to shatter rather than deform. Toughened and ABS-like grades exist to address this and they close some of the gap, but a functional bracket is still usually a filament job. Choosing a resin type
Standard
Cheapest, sharpest detail, most brittle. Right for display models, figurines and prototypes that will not be handled roughly.
ABS-like and tough
A toughened formulation that resists impact better at a small cost in fine detail. The best default for a first bottle, because the most common disappointment with resin is a print that snapped.
Water washable
Removes isopropyl alcohol from the workflow and replaces it with a wastewater problem: the rinse water is contaminated with uncured resin and cannot go down a drain. It is a real convenience with a real catch — see water washable resin.
Fast
Shorter exposure times per layer. On a tall print that is the difference between a print finishing overnight and finishing tomorrow afternoon.
Why gray is the miniature answer
Translucent resin scatters the curing light sideways, which softens fine features. Opaque flat gray does not, and it also photographs and primes better than a shiny color. This is why almost every detail-oriented resin is gray, and it is a real optical effect rather than a convention — the detail on resin for miniatures.
Cleanup is part of the purchase
A resin print comes off the plate covered in liquid resin. It has to be washed, then cured under UV, then disposed of properly.
