Water washable resin genuinely removes the alcohol from your workflow. What it does not remove is the disposal problem — the rinse water is contaminated with uncured resin and inherits every restriction the alcohol had.

What water washable genuinely improves
A gallon of isopropyl alcohol in a small workshop is a real fire load and a real ventilation consideration. Removing it is not a trivial convenience — for someone printing in a spare room or an apartment, it can be the difference between a workable setup and an uncomfortable one.
It is also cheaper per print, since water is free and alcohol is not, and it removes the ongoing cost of buying alcohol in quantity.
The catch, stated plainly
The water you wash the print in is now contaminated with uncured resin. Uncured resin is the hazardous part of resin printing, and it does not become safe by being suspended in water rather than in alcohol.
Formlabs publish disposal guidance treating resin waste as chemical waste rather than household waste Formlabs. That applies to contaminated rinse water exactly as it applies to contaminated alcohol. Pouring it down a household drain puts uncured photopolymer into the wastewater system.
Where it costs you
Cleaning fine detail. Alcohol dissolves uncured resin more aggressively than water does. On a miniature with deep recesses, water washing leaves residue where alcohol would not.
Drying time. Water evaporates more slowly than 99 percent isopropyl alcohol, so parts take longer to dry before curing, and trapped water in a hollow model is a real problem.
Surface finish. Some water washable formulations leave a slightly tacky surface if the wash was incomplete, which shows up at priming.
Mechanical properties. Water washable formulations are generally on the brittle side. For functional parts, a toughened alcohol-wash resin is usually the better choice — see tough resin.
Who should use it
Someone printing in a living space, where the alcohol is genuinely the limiting factor. Someone printing display models where the last five percent of detail cleaning does not matter. Someone printing occasionally, for whom buying and storing alcohol in bulk is a disproportionate hassle.
Someone printing miniatures for painting, or functional parts, is usually better served by 99 percent alcohol and a proper wash station. The workflow is on resin cleanup.
Safety does not change
This is the misconception worth ending on. Water washable describes the solvent, not the toxicity. Liquid water washable resin is a skin sensitizer exactly as any other photopolymer resin is, and Formlabs' requirement for non-reactive nitrile or neoprene gloves applies unchanged Formlabs. Full detail on resin safety.

Disposal
Uncured resin may be hazardous waste — never down a drainFormlabs
What it does well
No isopropyl alcohol bath, which removes a flammable solvent from a home workshop
Cleanup is faster and the smell is lower
What it does not
The rinse water is contaminated with uncured resin and must not go down a drain; Formlabs treat liquid resin as potential hazardous waste
Mechanically weaker and more brittle than the equivalent standard resin
+ − Can I pour water washable resin rinse water down the drain?
No. The water is contaminated with uncured resin and inherits its disposal requirements. Cure the suspended resin out under UV or sunlight, decant the clear water, and dispose of the cured solids properly.
+ − Is water washable resin safer to handle?
No. Water washable describes the solvent, not the toxicity. Liquid resin remains a skin sensitizer and Formlabs' guidance on non-reactive gloves applies identically.
+ − Does water washable resin clean as well as alcohol?
Not on fine detail. Alcohol dissolves uncured resin more aggressively, so deep recesses on a miniature clean better with 99 percent isopropyl alcohol. For simpler geometry the difference is small.
