The same spool costs three different amounts depending on where you buy it, and the cheapest sticker is frequently not the cheapest delivered. Each channel is better at something specific.

A laptop and a delivered parcel on a desk.
Delivered price is the only price
Shipping frequently exceeds the difference between two spools. A cheaper spool with paid shipping is often the more expensive one, and a free-shipping threshold changes the calculation again by pushing you to buy more than you planned.
Work in delivered totals per kilogram of filament, and compare that number across channels. It is the only comparison that means anything.
The four channels
Online marketplaces
The widest selection, the most competitive pricing, and fast delivery. This is where most filament is bought and it is the default for good reason.
What to watch: seller identity on marketplace listings, since the same product page can be fulfilled by different sellers with different storage practices. For PETG and nylon, where packaging quality genuinely matters, that is worth a moment's attention.
Physical stores
Immediate availability, no shipping, and the ability to buy one spool without a delivery charge making it uneconomic. Store-brand filament like Inland is genuinely good value at the shelf price and ordinary value delivered, which is the clearest example of the channel changing the verdict.
Direct from the brand
Full color range, guaranteed authenticity, and access to grades the marketplaces do not stock. Usually not the cheapest, but the right channel when you need a specific product rather than the cheapest equivalent.
It is also where the brands that publish technical data sheets tend to document their full range, which matters if you are choosing on published specifications.
Specialist 3D printing retailers
Curated selection, technical staff, and usually a wider range of engineering materials than a general marketplace carries. Worth it when you are buying something unusual and want it to arrive correctly packaged.
What should decide the channel
Buying your usual PLA? Cheapest delivered. It is a commodity purchase.
Buying PETG, nylon or ASA? Favor a channel where you can be confident about storage and packaging. Moisture-sensitive filament punishes a seller who stores badly.
Buying one spool today? A physical store, if you have one. Shipping on a single spool is disproportionate.
Buying a specific grade or color? Direct from the brand.
Buying several spools of one color? Whichever channel can supply them from one batch — see buying in bulk.
How our links work
Every buy link on this site goes to Amazon and is tagged, which means we earn a commission on qualifying purchases at no extra cost to you Amazon. That funds the site.
It also means we have an obvious incentive to point you at one channel, so it is worth saying plainly: if a physical store near you sells the same spool cheaper, buy it there. A page about where to buy filament that only named the channel we get paid for would not be worth reading. Our full affiliate disclosure sets out the arrangement.

The cheapest filament we would load without flinching, and the reason most people never need to spend more.
It depends on the spool and on shipping. Compare delivered price per kilogram across channels rather than sticker prices — shipping frequently exceeds the difference between two spools.
+ − Is store-brand filament worth buying?
At the shelf price, often yes. Delivered, it competes against budget brands that publish a tolerance and sell a toughened grade, and it usually loses that comparison.
+ − Does it matter which seller I buy from on a marketplace?
For PLA, rarely. For PETG, nylon and ASA, yes — those absorb moisture and a seller who stores stock badly hands you a spool that needs drying before its first print.
