SUNLU PETG is the cheapest PETG we would put in a printer. It needs more tuning than the premium spools and rewards it — after one evening on retraction settings, it stops being something you think about.

The case for cheap PETG

There is a behavioral argument for budget PETG that has nothing to do with the polymer: at a low enough price, you stop rationing it. People who buy expensive PETG print PLA for everything and save the PETG for parts they have decided need it — which means they print PLA parts that should have been PETG and then reprint them.

SUNLU PETG is cheap enough to be the default rather than the special occasion. For anything that gets handled, that is a better outcome than a marginally cleaner surface on a spool you use twice a year.

Its limits

Batch-to-batch variation is wider than the premium spools. Colors are not perfectly consistent between orders. There is no published technical data sheet. None of those matter for a bracket; all of them matter if you are printing a matched set or designing to a dimension.

The other honest caveat is packaging. SUNLU seal their spools, and the seal is adequate, but PETG punishes a marginal seal more than PLA does. Treat a new spool as suspect and check it on the first print rather than assuming.

What it does well

  • Overture publish an explicit drying temperature and time for their own PETG
  • Tolerant of a wide temperature window, which matters because PETG punishes a bad guess with stringing

What it does not

  • Strings more than the premium spools at the same settings
  • Bonds hard to smooth PEI — Prusa's PETG page says "Do not print on the smooth PEI sheet as the adhesion may be too strong"

Common questions

Is cheap PETG worth it?

Yes, if you are willing to tune it once. The polymer is fine; the savings come out of consistency and documentation, both of which you can substitute with an evening of calibration. Our cheap filament analysis covers the failure-rate side of the arithmetic.

Why does SUNLU PETG string more than my PLA?

Because it is PETG. All PETG strings more than PLA — it absorbs more water and stays viscous across a wider temperature band. Dry it, then set temperature, then tune retraction, in that order.
